Propane price per gallon by state today: all 50 states
This table lists all 50 states from A to Z. EIA publishes prices for 38 of them. The other 12 show Coming soon because EIA has no figure for them. We never guess or copy a regional number into a state. EIA has no figure for the District of Columbia either. The estimate column is 400 gallons times the price. That is a 500-gallon tank filled to 80 percent. We add the missing prices when EIA publishes them.

Wholesale. Suppliers buy propane at the wholesale price and sell it to homes at the retail price. At Mont Belvieu in Texas the spot price was $1.203 on Oct 27, 2026. That is up $0.070 from Oct 20, 2026. A year earlier on Oct 27, 2025 it was $0.674. So it is almost twice as high. Wholesale propane follows world energy markets. Our international LPG price page covers that side.

Weather. A heating degree day shows how cold it was. A higher number means more heating. From October 24 to October 30 the lower 48 states had 57 heating degree days. On the same days of 2025 the total was 88. So it was a bit milder than last year. That means less heating so far.
Today’s extra: cost to fill a 250, 500 or 1,000-gallon tank by region
Home tanks come in different sizes. Three sizes are common for homes: 250, 500 and 1,000 gallons. Bigger homes and farms tend to need the larger ones. A supplier fills any of them to about 80 percent. So the three sizes take about 200, 400 and 800 gallons.
Prices also differ by region. EIA publishes a home price for 6 regions. Here is the sum for each size, using the EIA price for the week of October 26, 2026.
| Region | EIA price per gallon | Estimate: 250-gal tank (200 gal) | Estimate: 500-gal tank (400 gal) | Estimate: 1,000-gal tank (800 gal) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| US average | $2.730 | $546.00 | $1,092.00 | $2,184.00 |
| New England | $3.917 | $783.40 | $1,566.80 | $3,133.60 |
| Central Atlantic | $3.639 | $727.80 | $1,455.60 | $2,911.20 |
| Lower Atlantic | $3.699 | $739.80 | $1,479.60 | $2,959.20 |
| Gulf Coast | $3.028 | $605.60 | $1,211.20 | $2,422.40 |
| Rocky Mountain | $2.377 | $475.40 | $950.80 | $1,901.60 |
| Midwest | $2.199 | $439.80 | $879.60 | $1,759.20 |

The New England region had the highest price at $3.917 per gallon. The Midwest had the lowest at $2.199. For a 1,000-gallon tank that gap adds up fast. Estimate: 800 × $3.917 = $3,133.60 against 800 × $2.199 = $1,759.20. That is about $1,374.40 more for the same tank.
Few people fill from empty. A partial fill is easy to work out. Take the tank size. Multiply it by 80 percent minus your gauge reading. Then multiply by your price. Say a 1,000-gallon tank reads 40 percent. It needs 1,000 × (0.80 − 0.40) = 400 gallons. At the US average that is 400 × $2.730 = $1,092.00 (estimate). The state table above lets you use your own state price instead.
How to check your own propane price
EIA gives a price for 38 states. It has no city or ZIP code prices. In our table Alaska, Arizona, California, Hawaii, Louisiana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, South Carolina, Washington, West Virginia and Wyoming say Coming soon because EIA has no figure for them. To find your own price:
- Call two or three local suppliers. Ask for the price per gallon and the date it applies.
- Ask about the delivery fee and any tank rental fee.
- Ask if the price is fixed for the winter or can change.
- Compare it with the state price in our weekly state table. A big gap is worth a question.
A low price per gallon is not the whole bill. Some suppliers add fees that do not show in any EIA number. Read our list of common hidden fees in propane contracts before you sign a winter contract.
