Wholesale propane price at Mont Belvieu
Mont Belvieu in Texas is the main US trading hub for propane. Its price often moves before home prices do. On November 3, 2026 it was $1.195 per gallon. A week earlier (Oct 27, 2026) it was $1.203. Four weeks earlier (Oct 6, 2026) it was $0.919. A year earlier (Nov 3, 2025) it was $0.635.
EIA’s weekly survey of wholesale prices put the US average at $1.440 per gallon in the week of Nov 2, 2026. The gap between that and the home price of $2.820 covers delivery, storage, the supplier’s costs and profit. Daily spot data reaches us about a week late.
Weather and heating demand
Cold weather raises propane demand. Heating degree days measure how cold it was. More means colder. In the seven days from Oct 27, 2026 to Nov 2, 2026 the lower 48 states had 59 heating degree days (population weighted). The same days last year had 91. So these seven days were milder than last year. New England had 14 on Nov 2, 2026 against 23 a year earlier (NOAA).
What drives propane prices
- The wholesale price. It follows crude oil, natural gas and exports.
- Distance. States far from the big hubs in Texas and Kansas pay more for transport.
- Demand. Prices tend to rise in a cold winter when many homes refill at once.
- Your supplier. Fees and contract terms change the real cost. Read our list of common hidden fees in propane contracts before you sign.
How to check your own propane price
- Call two or three local suppliers. Ask for the price per gallon and the date it applies.
- Ask about delivery fees, tank rental and minimum orders.
- Ask if the price is fixed for the winter or can change.
- Compare the quote with your state’s price above. A big gap is worth a question.
