Top Story: Crude’s Biggest Weekly Drop Since 2020

  • Brent was at $98.26 a barrel at 6:15 pm IST on Friday, down about 16% from its $118 peak on 30 October.
  • The Indian crude basket fell to $94.5 a barrel on Thursday, its lowest in two months and down 20.4% in a week.
  • ICRA says lower prices help India as a big importer, but OMCs still lose about ₹230–245 on every LPG cylinder.

Business Standard reported that Brent, the benchmark for about half the world’s oil trade, was trading at $98.26 a barrel late on Friday. That is about 16% below the $118 high seen on 30 October, and it marks the biggest weekly percentage drop since 2020.

The Times of India said the Indian crude basket slipped to $94.5 a barrel on Thursday, its lowest in two months. It was $118.7 on 30 October, so the week’s fall was about 20.4%. Hopes of a softer US–Iran stand-off after the US midterm results helped drive the slide.

That matters for cooking gas because India imports most of its crude and a large share of its LPG. Lower oil costs ease the import bill, but household cylinder rates still follow the Saudi Aramco contract price and monthly OMC revisions, not a single day’s crude print.

ICRA’s Prashant Vasisht told Business Standard that OMCs were still losing around ₹230–245 on every LPG cylinder, with petrol and diesel under-recoveries as well. So a cheaper week of oil is welcome, yet it does not cut your 14.2 kg refill today. For how past commercial cuts actually landed, see our commercial LPG price cut story.

Rupee hits a six-month high as oil slides

The Indian rupee gained for a sixth straight day and settled at 93.91 against the dollar on Friday, its highest close since 22 April 2026, Business Standard reported. It opened near 94.49, touched 93.83, then finished at 93.91, up about 0.60% on the day.

Dealers linked the move to falling crude and foreign equity inflows. A stronger rupee can soften the rupee cost of imported LPG, but that reaches the cylinder only if OMCs pass it on at the next revision.

HPCL still struggles to hire Hormuz tankers

Hindustan Petroleum chairman Vikas Kaushal told Bloomberg, as reported by OilPrice.com, that hiring ships to transit the Strait of Hormuz and load Gulf crude remains the main challenge. Cargoes can be available, yet vessels for the right loading dates are hard to find, and some owners cancel at the last minute.

Before the war HPCL usually lifted inside the Gulf. Now scarce ships and war premiums push it onto the spot market, adding millions of dollars to a cargo and feeding into India’s fuel and LPG costs. Our earlier note on Gulf LPG shipping disruption explains how Middle East risk hit cylinder supply before.

Free Diwali and Holi cylinders in several states

Jagran Josh summarised festive free-refill schemes across several states for Diwali 2026 and Holi 2027. In Uttar Pradesh, eligible PMUY families get two free refills a year, one around Diwali and one around Holi. Delhi offers two free cylinders a year for ration-card families, Andhra Pradesh’s Deepam 2.0 offers three a year, Maharashtra’s Annapurna scheme offers three, and Goa pays a yearly lump sum that covers three refills.

Beneficiaries usually pay at booking, then get a refund into an Aadhaar-linked bank account after delivery. Biometric Aadhaar e-KYC has been compulsory for PMUY subsidy benefits since 1 October 2026, so finish it before you book.

ADNOC signs a 10-year LNG deal with Gujarat Energy

Abu Dhabi National Oil Company signed a 10-year sales and purchase agreement with Gujarat Energy to supply up to four million tonnes of LNG a year from 2028, The Hindu reported. It is ADNOC’s fifth long-term LNG deal with an Indian buyer after BPCL, IOC, GAIL and HPCL.

Supply will come from XRG’s international portfolio outside the Gulf, marketed through ADNOC’s global LNG platform. Gujarat Energy runs city gas networks across 44 districts in six states. Extra long-term LNG does not cut today’s LPG cylinder price, but it strengthens India’s gas options for industry and piped cooking fuel.

Indane pushes lighter FTL cylinders with express delivery

IndianOil is promoting Indane XtraLite Now, a 10 kg composite free-trade LPG cylinder, and Indane Chhotu, a 5 kg FTL cylinder, with express delivery through the IndianOil ONE app, its customer portal, WhatsApp and Indane distributors, India.com reported. Both can be taken with identity proof and without address proof.

XtraLite Now is marketed as about 50% lighter than steel, with a panel to check the level. Chhotu targets smaller households and migrants, and both sit outside the subsidised 14.2 kg rate. For FTL pricing context, see our 5 kg FTL price note.

What it means for you

  • Your domestic cylinder price is the same today. Book your refill as usual.
  • Cheaper crude and a stronger rupee help India’s import bill first. They do not automatically cut the 14.2 kg rate before the next OMC revision.
  • If you want a festive free refill, finish Aadhaar e-KYC and check your state scheme with your distributor.
  • Commercial users remain on November rates until 1 December. See how past commercial moves worked in our commercial LPG price rise guide.

What to watch next

  • Whether Brent holds near $98 or falls further if US–Iran diplomacy firms up.
  • Saudi Aramco’s December contract price, usually notified near month-end.
  • The next Indian LPG price revision on 1 December 2026.
  • Whether tanker availability through Hormuz improves enough to cut freight premiums.
