Propane price per gallon by state today: all 50 states
This table lists all 50 states from A to Z. EIA publishes prices for 38 of them. The other 12 show Coming soon because EIA has no figure for them. We never guess or copy a regional number into a state. EIA has no figure for the District of Columbia either. The estimate column is 400 gallons times the price. That is a 500-gallon tank filled to 80 percent. We add the missing prices when EIA publishes them.

Wholesale. Suppliers buy propane at the wholesale price and sell it to homes at the retail price. At Mont Belvieu in Texas the spot price was $1.203 on Oct 27, 2026. That is up $0.070 from Oct 20, 2026. A year earlier on Oct 27, 2025 it was $0.674. So it is almost twice as high. Wholesale propane follows world energy markets. Our international LPG price page covers that side.

Weather. A heating degree day shows how cold it was. A higher number means more heating. From October 22 to October 28 the lower 48 states had 58 heating degree days. On the same days of 2025 the total was 83. So it was a bit milder than last year. That means less heating so far.
Today’s extra: late October propane prices, year by year
Is $2.730 a high price for this time of year? EIA has kept a weekly US home propane price since 1990. We took the survey week closest to October 26 in each of the last ten years. Then we put this week next to them.
| Year | EIA survey week | US home price per gallon | Difference from 2026 |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2026 | Oct 26, 2026 | $2.730 | — |
| 2025 | Oct 27, 2025 | $2.434 | +$0.296 |
| 2024 | Oct 28, 2024 | $2.430 | +$0.300 |
| 2023 | Oct 23, 2023 | $2.394 | +$0.336 |
| 2022 | Oct 24, 2022 | $2.660 | +$0.070 |
| 2021 | Oct 25, 2021 | $2.712 | +$0.018 |
| 2020 | Oct 26, 2020 | $1.801 | +$0.929 |
| 2019 | Oct 28, 2019 | $1.845 | +$0.885 |
| 2018 | Oct 29, 2018 | $2.418 | +$0.312 |
| 2017 | Oct 23, 2017 | $2.322 | +$0.408 |
| 2016 | Oct 24, 2016 | $2.069 | +$0.661 |

This week is the highest of these 11 late October readings. The next highest was 2021 at $2.712. The lowest was 2020 at $1.801. The average of the ten years before this one is $2.308 per gallon. So this week is $0.422 above that average.
Late October is the start of the heating season. In each of these ten years the US home price was higher in mid-January than in late October (EIA). The rise ran from $0.010 (2018 into 2019) to $0.382 (2020 into 2021). But the past is not a forecast. Wholesale prices are also much higher than a year ago (see above).
Estimate: what does that mean for a fill? Take 400 gallons for a 500-gallon tank. This week: 400 × $2.730 = $1,092.00. At the ten-year average: 400 × $2.308 = $923.20. The difference is about $168.80.
How to check your own propane price
EIA gives a price for 38 states. It has no city or ZIP code prices. In our table Alaska, Arizona, California, Hawaii, Louisiana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, South Carolina, Washington, West Virginia and Wyoming say Coming soon because EIA has no figure for them. To find your own price:
- Call two or three local suppliers. Ask for the price per gallon and the date it applies.
- Ask about the delivery fee and any tank rental fee.
- Ask if the price is fixed for the winter or can change.
- Compare it with the state price in our weekly state table. A big gap is worth a question.
A low price per gallon is not the whole bill. Some suppliers add fees that do not show in any EIA number. Read our list of common hidden fees in propane contracts before you sign a winter contract.
