Propane price per gallon by state today: all 50 states
This table lists all 50 states from A to Z. EIA publishes prices for 38 of them. The other 12 show Coming soon because EIA has no figure for them. We never guess or copy a regional number into a state. EIA has no figure for the District of Columbia either. The estimate column is 400 gallons times the price. That is a 500-gallon tank filled to 80 percent. We add the missing prices when EIA publishes them.

Wholesale. Suppliers buy propane at the wholesale price and sell it to homes at the retail price. At Mont Belvieu in Texas the spot price was $1.203 on Oct 27, 2026. That is up $0.070 from Oct 20, 2026. A year earlier on Oct 27, 2025 it was $0.674. So it is almost twice as high. Wholesale propane follows world energy markets. Our international LPG price page covers that side.

Weather. A heating degree day shows how cold it was. A higher number means more heating. From October 20 to October 26 the lower 48 states had 57 heating degree days. On the same days of 2025 the total was 74. So it was a bit milder than last year. That means less heating so far.
Today’s extra: propane vs heating oil this week
Many homes can use either propane or heating oil. EIA publishes a weekly price for both. For the week of October 26, 2026 the US home propane average was $2.730 per gallon. The US home heating oil average was $6.233 per gallon. Heating oil cost $3.503 more per gallon that week.
| Fuel | US home average | Change from week before | Week |
|---|---|---|---|
| Propane | $2.730 per gallon | +$0.044 (from $2.686) | Week of Oct 26, 2026 |
| Heating oil | $6.233 per gallon | +$0.024 (from $6.209) | Week of Oct 26, 2026 |
| Difference (oil minus propane) | $3.503 per gallon | — | Week of Oct 26, 2026 |

Estimate: what does that gap mean for a 400-gallon fill? At the propane average: 400 × $2.730 = $1,092.00. At the heating oil average: 400 × $6.233 = $2,493.20. The difference is about $1,401.20 for the same number of gallons. Real homes also differ in how much heat each fuel gives per gallon. Ask your supplier before you switch.
Propane was also $0.296 higher than a year ago ($2.434 in the week of Oct 27, 2025). Heating oil moved only $0.024 from the week before. So propane still looks cheaper per gallon this week. Local delivery fees can close some of that gap.
How to check your own propane price
EIA gives a price for 38 states. It has no city or ZIP code prices. In our table Alaska, Arizona, California, Hawaii, Louisiana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, South Carolina, Washington, West Virginia or Wyoming say Coming soon because EIA has no figure for them. To find your own price:
- Call two or three local suppliers. Ask for the price per gallon and the date it applies.
- Ask about the delivery fee and any tank rental fee.
- Ask if the price is fixed for the winter or can change.
- Compare it with the state price in our weekly state table. A big gap is worth a question.
The EIA wholesale average was $1.291 and the home average was $2.730. The gap is $1.439. It pays for trucks and storage and it varies by supplier. Read our list of common hidden fees in propane contracts before you sign.
