Propane price per gallon by state today: all 50 states
This table lists all 50 states from A to Z. EIA publishes prices for 38 of them. The other 12 show Coming soon because EIA has no figure for them. We never guess or copy a regional number into a state. EIA has no figure for the District of Columbia either. The estimate column is 400 gallons times the price. That is a 500-gallon tank filled to 80 percent. We add the missing prices when EIA publishes them.

Wholesale. Suppliers buy propane at the wholesale price and sell it to homes at the retail price. At Mont Belvieu in Texas the spot price was $1.133 on Oct 20, 2026. That is up $0.095 from Oct 13, 2026. A year earlier on Oct 20, 2025 it was $0.581. So it is almost twice as high. Wholesale propane follows world energy markets. Our international LPG price page covers that side.

Weather. A heating degree day shows how cold it was. A higher number means more heating. From October 18 to October 24 the lower 48 states had 62 heating degree days. On the same days of 2025 the total was 60. So the cold is about the same as last year.
Today’s extra: cost to fill a 500-gallon propane tank
Estimate: a supplier fills a home tank to about 80 percent of its size. This leaves room for the propane to expand when it warms up. So a 500-gallon tank takes about 400 gallons. Here is the sum step by step.
- 500 gallons × 0.80 = 400 gallons.
- Take the EIA price for the state.
- Multiply by 400. At the US average: 400 × $2.689 = $1,075.60.
Prices differ a lot by state. We use the lowest and the highest of the 38 states with an EIA price. We also use the middle one. It is Kentucky. It ranks 19th from the bottom.
| Where | EIA price per gallon | Sum | Estimate for 400 gallons |
|---|---|---|---|
| North Dakota (lowest) | $1.651 | 400 × $1.651 | $660.40 |
| US average | $2.689 | 400 × $2.689 | $1,075.60 |
| Kentucky (middle state) | $2.844 | 400 × $2.844 | $1,137.60 |
| Florida (highest) | $4.928 | 400 × $4.928 | $1,971.20 |

The same tank costs $1,310.80 more in Florida than in North Dakota. Most owners do not fill from empty. Say your gauge reads 30 percent. The tank must reach 80 percent. That is 50 percent of 500 gallons or 250 gallons. At the US average: 250 × $2.689 = $672.25 (estimate).
How to check your own propane price
EIA gives a price for 38 states. It has no city or ZIP code prices. In our table Alaska, Arizona, California, Hawaii, Louisiana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, South Carolina, Washington, West Virginia or Wyoming say Coming soon because EIA has no figure for them. To find your own price:
- Call two or three local suppliers. Ask for the price per gallon and the date it applies.
- Ask about the delivery fee and any tank rental fee.
- Ask if the price is fixed for the winter or can change.
- Compare it with the state price in our weekly state table. A big gap is worth a question.
The EIA wholesale average was $1.242 and the home average was $2.689. The gap is $1.447. It pays for trucks and storage and it varies by supplier. Read our list of common hidden fees in propane contracts before you sign.
