Source: Goodreturns (page dated 25 October 2026). Jammu and Kashmir has two capitals. Port Blair was renamed Sri Vijaya Puram. Goodreturns still uses the old name.

Why are Ladakh and Lakshadweep not available? Goodreturns has no page for either place. Three other price sites show three different amounts for Leh, from ₹1,074.50 to ₹1,196.50. Only one small site lists Kavaratti and we could not check it against a second source. We would rather leave a gap than print a guess.

Where sources differ. A Rajya Sabha reply reported by The Indian Express (20 July 2026) gave a state-wise table with prices as of 1 July 2026. It matches the table above for nearly every capital. Two small differences remain. It shows Patna at ₹1,040 against ₹1,031.50 here. It shows Shimla at ₹986.50 against ₹987.50 here. We kept the current Goodreturns figure for both. Please confirm with your distributor.

Which capitals pay the most and the least?

The six cheapest capitals sit within ₹8 of each other. They are Mumbai, New Delhi, Bengaluru, Jaipur, Bhopal and Gandhinagar. All six are between ₹941.50 and ₹949.50. Four North-East capitals are at the other end. Agartala, Gangtok, Aizawl and Imphal are all above ₹1,093.

Spotlight: why the North-East capitals pay the most

The gap is easy to see. Agartala pays ₹161 more than Mumbai for the same cylinder. That is about 17 percent more. Gangtok, Aizawl and Imphal are not far behind.

Not every North-East capital is expensive. Kohima in Nagaland is at ₹961. That is only ₹19.50 above Mumbai. Guwahati is at ₹991.

Why the difference? City prices usually reflect the cost of moving cylinders from the bottling plant to the distributor, plus local costs. Hills, long roads and thin supply routes add to that cost. The sources we read do not publish a breakdown for each city. Treat this as a general explanation and not a sourced figure.

Recent LPG price changes

What decides the LPG price in India

The Saudi contract price

India imports a large share of its LPG. The Saudi contract price is the reference. For October 2026 it was $680 a tonne for propane and $730 for butane. In September it was $625 and $660. Both rose. These figures come from Reuters (1 October 2026). The November price had not been announced as of 25 October 2026.

The loss on each cylinder

Oil companies sell the domestic cylinder below cost. The loss is called under-recovery. The chairman of HPCL said the loss was ₹245 a cylinder in October. He expects it to reach ₹327 in November, as reported by Moneycontrol on 23 October 2026. A larger loss does not mean a price rise is coming. It does show the pressure on the companies.

The rupee and supply

LPG is bought in dollars. A weaker rupee makes imports costlier. Supply matters too. Moneycontrol reported that India is raising its own LPG output because Gulf supply is uncertain before the festive season.

Subsidy and booking rules

The Rajya Sabha reply quoted by The Indian Express says the effective price for Ujjwala (PMUY) households is ₹642 for a 14.2 kg cylinder. The market price is ₹942 in Delhi. The difference is the targeted subsidy.

  • From 7 September 2026 the booking gap is 25 days for all consumers, as reported by The Hindu.
  • Biometric Aadhaar checks for domestic users began on 1 October 2026, as reported by The Times of India.

How to check the price in your own town

  1. Open your latest cash memo or bill. The amount charged is the real price for you.
  2. Look at your LPG company’s app or website and open the booking screen. It shows the amount before you pay.
  3. Ask your distributor for the current rate and the delivery charge. Ask if the charge is already included.
  4. Compare it with the capital price on this page. A small difference is normal. A large one is worth a question.

Oil companies usually review LPG prices on the 1st of each month. The next review would normally fall on 1 November 2026. Diwali falls on 8 November. Nothing has been announced for either date. We will update this series every morning and will mark any change clearly.
