What decides the LPG price in India
The Saudi contract price
India imports much of its LPG. The Saudi contract price for propane and butane is the main reference. For November 2026 Saudi Aramco set $720 a tonne for propane and $780 for butane. In October it was $680 and $730. These figures were reported by MT Newswires and Argaam on 29 October 2026. The commercial cylinder follows this benchmark more closely. The home cylinder price is set with policy in mind.
The loss on each home cylinder
Oil companies sell the home cylinder below cost. The loss is called under-recovery. The chairman of HPCL said it was ₹245 a cylinder in October and expected ₹327 in November, as reported by Moneycontrol on 23 October 2026. A bigger loss is not a price announcement. It shows the pressure on the companies.
Taxes and transport
The same cylinder costs more in some cities because of state taxes, transport from the bottling plant and local charges. That is why Agartala pays ₹160.50 more than Delhi for a home cylinder. Oil companies do not publish a city-by-city breakdown.
Ujjwala, subsidy and booking rules
Homes under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana get ₹300 off on up to four refills a year since June 2026 (it was nine refills before). In Delhi that makes the effective price ₹642 on those refills. Sources: PIB (June 2026), Financial Express (8 June 2026) and a Lok Sabha reply of 6 August 2026. See our Ujjwala price explainer of 2 November for the full working.
- The booking gap is 25 days from your last refill for all consumers since 7 September 2026 (The Hindu, September 2026).
- Biometric Aadhaar e-KYC is needed to book a refill at the regulated price since 1 October 2026 (The Times of India, 1 October 2026). If you already did it you do not need to repeat it. Mint reported on 26 October 2026 that the rule is being enforced more strictly from November.
How to check the price in your own town
- Open your latest cash memo. The amount charged is your real price.
- Open your LPG company app and start a booking. It shows the amount before you pay.
- Ask your distributor for the current rate and whether delivery is included.
- Compare it with your capital’s price on this page. A small gap is normal. A large one is worth a question.
