Top Story: Lucknow LPG Strike Hits 80 Indane Agencies

  • Transporters at IOC’s Amausi bottling plant stopped lifting cylinders on Tuesday.
  • No fresh supplies reached 80 Indane agencies in Lucknow district for three days.
  • An IOC official said alternative arrangements mean supplies are not affected.

The strike by cylinder transporters at Indian Oil’s Amausi plant in Sarojini Nagar entered its third day on Thursday, the Hindustan Times reported. Lifting has been suspended since Tuesday, so fresh supplies stopped reaching 80 Indane agencies in Lucknow district.

The transporters say Indian Oil promised them work for 192 gas agencies across eight districts under a 2023 tender, then cut that work. They say lower earnings leave them unable to repay loans taken to buy trucks. A planned meeting with company officials on Thursday did not happen.

A senior IOC official told the paper that talks are going on and that alternative arrangements have been made, so supplies are not affected. If the deadlock lasts, though, delivery waits could grow during the festive rush.

Oil bounces back towards $100

Brent crude rose 4% to $98.38 a barrel on Thursday afternoon US time, OilPrice.com reported, a day after its 8.7% plunge. Hopes of a quick US–Iran peace deal faded, and Iran’s navy said a tanker hit a mine east of the Strait of Hormuz.

The same report said crude exports from Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Iraq and Kuwait rose 10% in October. More Gulf supply could ease prices over time, but the market is still swinging day to day.

India’s crude import cost falls to a two-month low

The Indian crude basket fell to $103.8 a barrel on Tuesday, its lowest in two months, after averaging $119.9 in October, The Times of India reported. October’s average was the highest since March 2012.

The paper said the fall offers some relief to oil marketing companies but none to consumers for now. ICRA’s chief economist said a lasting fall would reduce the need to raise petrol and diesel prices.

Iran’s Hormuz exemption: India paid no transit fees

Iran has lifted its Hormuz transit restrictions for ships from India, China, Iraq and Qatar, The Economic Times reported. An Iranian lawmaker said fees had been collected from Indian and Chinese ships, but people familiar with the matter told ET that the Indian government paid no transit fees for ships cleared through the external affairs ministry.

Freer passage through Hormuz matters because the Gulf is a major source of India’s LPG imports.

Neighbour watch: Bangladesh LPG crosses Tk 2,000

Bangladesh’s regulator BERC raised the official price of a 12 kg LPG cylinder by Tk 223 to Tk 2,060 for November, The Daily Star reported. It is the first time the official price has gone above Tk 2,000, and it is up Tk 475 in two months.

BERC sets prices using the Saudi Aramco contract price, which is $720 a tonne for propane and $780 for butane in November. India’s LPG import costs follow the same benchmark.

Pakistan scraps LPG quotas for open auctions

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said state-owned firms will import LPG again and local output will be sold through open, camera-monitored auctions, ProPakistani reported. The first auction is due next week, and the base price will be linked to the Aramco contract price.

The report said cylinders had sold for up to Rs. 7,200 in the open market, more than double the notified Rs. 3,296. It shows how quickly LPG prices can run away when supply is tight.

What it means for you

  • Your domestic cylinder price is the same today. Book your refill as usual.
  • If you are in Lucknow, book a little early before Diwali in case deliveries slow down.
